What "poor"?

A favorite pastime of those on the left is bleating about the poor, poverty, social justice, etc ... Their obvious ‘truths’ about poverty form the basis for calls for ever more state intervention with ever more and ever bigger entitlement programs. After all, how can anyone be in favour of ‘social injustice’?

Together, Mark Steyn and Kathy Shaidle do a fine job of countering the lefty bleats.

Updates: Steyn here and here. Shaidle here, here and here.

I've been around the world a few times, been through Central and Southeast Asia.
There are no poor people in Canada. There are a lot of people who are irresponsible and who make dumb decisions.

John Wayne said it best, 'Life is tough, it's a lot tougher if you're stupid.'

Poor is a relative term, certainly. I would describe the poor in Canada as those who incur debts while paying all of their income toward mere survival, and after years of hard work still haven't any equity or assets worth anything. That's poor. But it's still not as bad as living in Cuba.
